Research Task 2- Minority linguistic and cultural manuscripts

Cross-cultural contacts can lead to conflicts over issues of language use, culture specific expectations of conduct and require renegotiation of terms, means and ends of interaction. These draw on distinctness of actors who identify themselves vis-a-vis others as occupying distinct positions in political, social, economic structures (Nelde 1987, 1997). These positions are, of course, not those of cultures, but rather of individuals, who are members of cultural communities (Phillipson & Skutnabb-Kangas 1986). Early 1990s saw a great number of territorial revisions across Europe which sought to establish that the likes are governed by the likes, that there would be no taxation without representation, and that the owners of territories have beneficial terms of access to structural resources these territories provide. Since, the manifestations of conflict linked to cultural identity appear to be far less frequently, this does not mean to say that these are unlikely to reoccur in the future. The process of societal change not only requires a constant renegotiation of terms of institutional reference and redefinition of increasingly fluid cultural identities of actors. The processes of social change require actors’ active engagement with the terms of their activity and constant redefinition of the goals of their actions. Within this RT current projects include:

  • The impact of individualisation on perception of “culture”, “language” and “ethnic/national community”
  • Stateless cultures in transnational action: Roma inclusion and perceptions of integration
