Poland was a multiethnic country throughout most of its existence. In the period 1918-1939 approximately one third of its population consisted of non-Poles (mainly Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Lithuanians, Jews, Germans and Russians) who inhabited predominantly more than half of its territory. After World War II, Poland was officially proclaimed a monoethnic state, even though some twenty ethnic groups identified themselves as such and emphasized their separateness from others.
