The dissertation shows how the institution of autonomy, by promoting an ethnic elite in control of state-like institutions, and by enhancing factors such as leadership, economic viability, and external support, played a crucial role together with these factors in the escalation to conflict in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, whereas the absence of autonomy mitigated conflict in Javakheti's Armenian and Kvemo Kartli's Azeri populations.

http://www.opendemocracy.net/od-russia/madeleine-reeves/ethnicisation-of-violence-in-southern-kyrgyzstan-0
Media talk of 'ethnic conflict' in Kyrgyzstan is misleading, in that it takes ethnicity to be causal. This does not describe the complex, messy process - political, economic, social and structural - whereby this crisis has become ethnicised. What matters now is to understand why and how this has occurred with such destructive speed.

Abstract (Paper available in German only)
Internal rural migration is a demographic phenomenon, which affects the eastern Bolivian lowlands mainly in two different ways. On the one hand the migrations provoke a profound modification of the landscape by exploitation and potential degradation of the natural resources. On the other hand massive inflows of migrants cause the transformation of the local society. Intensity and dimension of those modifications depend on the level of integration of the individuals and groups, which are involved. Consequently, the inclusions of the actors into the social system (social integration) and the relationship between the parts of the society (systemic integration) determines the societal as well as the ecological equilibrium.
The current situation in the research area is characterized by the fragile systemic integration of the colonization area into the regional economy and society. There is a lack of market access for small-scale farmers, political and educational participation as well as social unity and equality. These facts complicate not only social integration and intercultural living together among migrants from the Andean highlands and the lowland people, but also threaten the ecological balance of the region. Furthermore, the results show a latent correlation between social integration and individual management of common natural resources, especially, if people prefer the personal prosperity prior to common welfare.
Consequently, without the political and civil intentions to resolve the systemic disintegration of a rural region like the research area, which is affected by poverty and different standards of living of migrant and local households, there will not be a sustainable socio-economic development.
