Will Kymlicka and Exporting Liberal Pluralism: Western Political Theory and Ethnic Relations in Eastern Europe

Are Western models of multiculturalism and minority rights relevant for the post-Communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe? Taking the theories of Will Kymlicka as a starting point, this electronic symposium analyses the suitability of exporting Western models of liberal democracy to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). In an introductory essay, Professor Kymlicka explores the social and political conditions that have led to the adoption of such models in the West and considers the various factors which might make their adoption difficult in CEE. In addition, he examines the potential role that the international community can play in overcoming these obstacles.

This Special Focus aims to generate further debate on this timely issue. Further commentary and criticism has been solicited from a number of leading academics and practitioners across Europe - East and West - and the Editors encourage further debate especially from younger academics and practitioners.
