JEMIE - Journal on Ethnopolitics and Minority Issues in Europe is a peer-reviewed electronic journal edited under the auspices of the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI). JEMIE is a multi-disciplinary journal, which addresses minority issues across a broad range of studies, such as ethnopolitics, democratization, conflict management, good governance, participation, minority issues and minority rights. It is devoted to analysing current developments in minority-majority relations in the wider Europe, and stimulating further debate amongst academics, students and practitioners on issues of instability and integration that are hampering democratic development in Europe - both East and West.

Enlargement and Reconciliation: EU Accession and the Division of Cyprus

The ongoing conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots poses a severe challenge to the European Union. With European Union enlargement moving ever closer, the issue of Cyprus embodies the problems that are increasingly likely to arise when a fundamentally civilian organization is faced with the problems of tackling ethnopolitical conflict. Can the European Union play an effective role in forging a path towards settlement and what would be the likely outcome for the divided island should a settlement not be reached?

This Special Focus will explore these questions from a number of angles, looking at current attempts to resolve the division of the island and the likely effects this will have on future intercommunal relations. As with previous issues, the Editors encourage further contribution to this timely issue, especially from younger academics and practitioners.
