Language & Culture Diversity
ECMI’s initiative on Language and Culture Diversity is taking up the importance of language and culture diversity as an European value.
The Programme’s objective is to advance the theoretical understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity. Its main focus is on minority languages and cultures: their vitality, legal and socio-economic place, and impact on European diversity.
The programme views language and culture diversity from three different perspectives: the enrichment that diversity offers to society, the socioeconomics of language and culture diversity, and the language aspect of participation in public and political life. It looks into actions to be taken by governments and the civil society that help to support minority languages in their functions and status as well as in assisting their speakers to appreciate them as part of their cultural heritage.
