ECMI Welcomes New Senior Researcher

2022-02-01

The position of Senior Researcher and Head of Cluster for Conflict and Security at the ECMI was filled today by Dr. Felix Schulte. Dr. Schulte joins the ECMI after having worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Mannheim.

Dr. Schulte’s research focuses on conflict dynamics, including analyzing triggering events that lead to ethnic conflict. In addition, he has worked on territorial autonomy, co-authoring the creation of the TERRGO dataset on territorial self-governance.

“I look forward to bringing a renewed focus to conflict and security studies at the ECMI,” said Schulte. “Conflict is not only related to structural inequalities, but also micro-events and emotions. This is an emerging area in the field.”

Previously, Dr. Schulte has served as a consultant for the Office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities. He has also been a visiting scholar at EURAC in Bolzano, Italy and the Åland Islands Peace Institute, Mariehamn, Finland.

“Having Felix on our team will strengthen the ECMI’s focus on quantitative research as well as conflict studies. He has a strong publication record and ambition to be a leader in his field,” noted ECMI’s director, Vello Pettai
