The  ECMI Summer School team conducted the 12th edition of the Annual Summer School on National Minorities in Border Regions - this year in the Basque Country, Oñati.

From 24th until 31st of July 2022 the 18 chosen participants examined the participation of national minorities in political life.

As in the years before, the Summer School 2022 pursued again a multi-disciplinary approach and looked at its umbrella theme ‘Minorities as Citizens’ from different perspectives. The legal definition of citizenship, political representation, collective mobilization, transnational frameworks and minority representative bodies were some of the topics adressed in the course of the intensive eight days programme.

Furthermore, the Summer School not only highlighted conceptual lenses, but also profiled practical examples and case studies by giving examples of political minority parties and successful social movements. Concrete mechanisms for monitoring European norms and the analysis of national minority councils were also presented.

In addition to the lectures, the participants were also invited to explore the region and to get to know more about its interesting history. The full programme can be found here.

The Annual Summer School on National Minorities in Border Regions was (as in the previous years) co-organized with the European think tank Coppieters Foundation.
