ECMI participates in conference on Citizenship and Democracy

Dr Joanna Jasiewicz, ECMI Junior Research Associate, participated in the European Sociological Association conference on 3-5 November 2010 in Lille, France. The conference, organized by the ESA Research Network 32 - Political Sociology, gathered experienced and early career scholars under the theme “Citizenship and Democracy: Membership, forms of participation, within and across European territories”. The goal of the mid-term conference was to establish the evolutions of the links between members of political communities, the territories of authority, the evolving forms of democracy, and the ways in which the political is embedded in social, economic, and cultural contexts (see further here).

Joanna Jasiewicz presented an article on “Between Supranational Institutions and Domestic Opportunity Structure: Explaining Ethnic Minorities’ Claims in Poland” that examines the institutional and cultural context that channels the opportunities and content of ethnic minorities’ demands. Minorities’ participation in the public sphere is one of the central topics of the Politics and Civil Society Cluster’s research.
