ECMI participates in International Parliamentary Conference on Minorities and Indigenous Peoples

An International Parliamentary Conference entitled Parliaments, minorities and indigenous peoples: Effective participation in politics takes place in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas (Mexico), from 31 October to 3 November 2010. The conference brings together representatives of national parliaments from around the world. The conference participants will examine ways to overcome the challenges to effective participation of minorities and indigenous peoples in politics. The event is organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Mexican Congress of the Union and the Government of the State of Chiapas, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme; the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; the United Nations Independent Expert on minority issues; and Minority Rights Group International.

ECMI Senior Research Associate Dr. Oleh Protsyk serves in expert capacity at the conference. Research on minority representation in national parliaments is an important component of work for the ECMI Politics and Civil Society Cluster. The Cluster´s research on matters of minority representation has become a basis for the ECMI contribution to the on-going expert evaluation of parliamentary practices of minority/indigenous inclusion which is undertaken under the initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
