Former OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Max van der Stoel

The Chairman and the Executive Board of the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) offer their deepest condolences to the office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities (HCNM)and the relatives of Max van der Stoel, first High Commissioner on National Minorities and former Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands who passed away on 23 April 2011 at the age of 86.

Max van der Stoel was appointed HCNM in December 1992 and served until July 2001. During this turbulent period of Europe's history, he founded and shaped the institution of the HCNM and developed its conflict prevention mandate.

Max van der Stoel visited the ECMI shortly after its founding in 1996 and gave the first public lecture, the Kompagnietor Lecture on 10 April 1997. For a transcript of the lecture, click here. The former HCNM also served on the Advisory Council of the ECMI from 2006-2008.
