Will Hughes

Will is a visiting researcher at the ECMI, who is currently a PhD student in Human Geography at Newcastle University. In his undergraduate degree, he conducted a project in Nicosia focussing on the UN Buffer Zone and wrote his dissertation on collective memories of East Berlin’s football scene. In Will’s master’s degree, he performed a textual analysis on geopolitical scripting in ECMI publications for his thesis. He has research interests in refugees and asylum seekers, nationalism and borderlands, classical and critical geopolitics, peace geographies and institutional knowledge production and transmission.

Will is conducting ethnographic fieldwork at the ECMI for his PhD thesis. During his time here, he hopes to gain a thorough understanding of ECMI’s work by actively working on projects conducted at the centre.
