Dr. Elmira Muratova, a recent addition to the ECMI's research team, captivated audiences with her recent engagements in the academic arena, shedding light on the dynamics faced by the Crimean Tatar community post the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The multifaceted researcher took the stage at both the Humboldt University Lecture Series and the George Washington University's Petrach Program on Ukraine, leaving a mark on the discourse surrounding Ukraine's complex socio-cultural landscape.

At the Humboldt University Lecture Series event, titled "Rethinking and Reimagining Ukraine in Times of War - and After," organized by the HU Slavic Department, Elmira's lecture, "Crimean Tatars’ Collective Identity, Memory, and Islam," looked into the profound impact of the annexation on the Crimean Tatars. Going beyond the geopolitical lens, she unraveled the intricate fabric of institutional and gender role changes within the Crimean Tatar community, offering a nuanced perspective on the lasting effects of the 2014 events.

Elmira continued to elaborate this topic at the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES). As part of the Petrach Program on Ukraine, she presented "Crimean Tatars after the 2014 Annexation: Collective Memory and Coping Strategies" during a seminar on December 6, 2023. Her discussion navigated through the resilience of the Crimean Tatar community, exploring coping strategies that ranged from open resistance to subtle forms expressed through cultural products and compelled collaboration.

These thought-provoking presentations by Elmira Muratova not only contribute significantly to the ongoing academic dialogue but also bring a fresh perspective to the intricate tapestry of Ukrainian society in the aftermath of geopolitical shifts. As her insights continue to resonate, the ECMI remains committed to supporting and showcasing the impactful work of its researchers on the international stage.
