Craig Willis at the 3rd Biennial IAMLMR Conference in South Africa

2024-07-23

We are pleased to announce that Craig Willis recently attended the 3rd biennial conference of the International Association for Minority Language Media Research (IAMLMR), which took place at North-West University in Mahikeng, South Africa, on 9 and 10 July. This event, organized by Prof. Abiodun Salawu and Prof. Gilbert Motsaathebe from the Indigenous Language Media in Africa (ILMA) research entity at NWU, gathered researchers and practitioners from around the globe to discuss issues in minority language media sphere.

During the conference, Craig represented the association during the official welcoming and presented his paper, which is part of his ongoing PhD research. His participation underscores the ECMI's ongoing commitment to minority language media research.

The IAMLMR conference featured over 30 presentations, focusing on various indigenous language media contexts in Africa, with additional contributions from Europe via online sessions. ECMI's Sergiusz Bober also contributed to the conference remotely, adding to the diverse range of perspectives shared.

The ECMI has a history with IAMLMR, having hosted the 2nd edition of the biennial conference in 2022 in Flensburg. Both Craig Willis and Sergiusz Bober, who have been members of IAMLMR since 2020, continue to play active roles in this international research community. Looking ahead, the 4th edition of the IAMLMR conference is scheduled to be held at Nordicom in Gothenburg, Sweden, in late June 2026. It will be co-organized by Dr. Maarit Jaakkola and IAMLMR member Dr. Jenny Stenberg-Sirén of the University of Helsinki. We are excited about the future of this important conference and the continued collaboration among minority language media researchers.
