Minority Issues in the Denmark-Germany Border Region
The Minority Issues in the Denmark-Germany Border Region cluster, established in 2022, reflects the ECMI’s commitment to the Danish-German border region, which is widely perceived as a best practice example of conflict resolution, minority accommodation, and inclusion. In close cooperation with communities and regional stakeholders, this interdisciplinary cluster will critically examine minority experiences, focusing on all four national minorities in the border region: the Germans in Denmark as well as the Danes, the North Frisians, and the Sinti and Roma in Germany.

These are some of the key questions the cluster aims to answer:
- What are the key elements of minority accommodation, empowerment, and inclusion in the model?
- Are there differences in terms of awareness and attitudes regarding the different minority groups?
- What are the key challenges that need to be addressed to promote harmonious intergroup relations between the majorities and minorities in the region?
- How can the maintenance and revitalisation of minority languages in the region be supported?
- How does the current political climate create new spaces for cross-border region-building and for developing border regions as attractive living spaces – and how will these developments impact minority life?
