ECMI staff presents at the International Symposium on Language Ideologies and Attitudes (IDEOLING) in Palma de Mallorca
Our three colleagues, Maddi Dorronsoro, Ruth Kircher and Craig Willis, presented their research at the International Symposium on Language Ideologies and Attitudes (IDEOLING) in Palma de Mallorca last week (October 17-19).
It was the first symposium of its kind, fully focused on language attitudes and ideologies. The event was filled with experts and young researchers in the field, offering a great opportunity for networking and exchanging ideas.
Ruth Kircher gave a plenary talk titled "The Role of Language Attitudes in Minority Language Revitalisation: Insights from Traditional Speakers, New Speakers, and Non-Speakers of Frisian." She presented data from Fryslân (drawing on her collaborative research with Mirjam Vellinga from the Algemiene Fryske Ûnderrjocht Kommisje and Ethan Kutlu from the University of Iowa), as well as from Nordfriesland (based on her work with Lena Terhart from the Nordfriisk Instituut and Samantha Litty from the Europa-Universität Flensburg).
Craig Willis' presentation, titled "Non-Speakers’ Attitudes Towards Minority Language Broadcasting: A Five-Case Comparison," was linked to his PhD research.
Maddi Dorronsoro presented on "Navigating New Scenarios: Basque ‘Breathing Spaces’ and Immigration." Her research focused on the language attitudes of Basque speakers in vernacular communities in Gipuzkoa. She conducted her fieldwork in early October 2024, and this was the first time she presented her research project and some early insights at a conference.
