2024-06-20

The workshop “Navigating Change: The Resilience of Territorial Autonomy” took place on June 13-14, 2024, at the Danish Central Library in Flensburg, bringing together a diverse group of experts, scholars, and practitioners. This event, convened by Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark from Åbo Akademi University and Felix Schulte, ECMI Senior Researcher, aimed to explore the resilience of territorial autonomy in the face of global challenges.

Throughout the two-day workshop, participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions and analyses on various themes important for understanding the durability of autonomy arrangements. Key topics included the factors that contribute to the resilience of autonomy in different contexts, the balance between continuity and change in territorial autonomy, and methods for conceptualizing and measuring resilience within this framework.

The workshop featured detailed case studies from regions such as Åland, South Tyrol-Italy, and Gagauzia, offering valuable comparative insights. These case studies played an important role in highlighting practical approaches and strategies that can inform policy development and support the resilience of territorial autonomy.

The conveners, Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark and Felix Schulte, expressed their gratitude to all participants and discussants for their valuable contributions, which significantly enriched the workshop's outcomes. They also extended their appreciation to the Dansk Centralbibliotek for Sydslesvig e.V. for their generous hosting of the event.
