Elmira Muratova recently took part in the workshop “New Research on Crimean Tatars: Post-2014 Challenges and Strategies,” organized by the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) in collaboration with the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM). Held in Berlin on 17 October 2024, this workshop convened international scholars from various disciplines to explore the impacts of Crimea’s 2014 annexation on the identity, migration patterns, coping strategies, and future aspirations of the Crimean Tatars.

The discussion addressed the unique challenges of researching the Crimean Tatar community post-2014, including restricted access to Crimea, security risks, migration dynamics, and the fragmented state of existing knowledge. The workshop served as a platform for open dialogue, fostering the exchange of research questions, perspectives, and methodologies, and emphasizing the importance of sharing findings with both academic and non-academic audiences.

The workshop concluded with a screening of the documentary The Return, directed by Katya Fedulova, at Kino Krokodil. A discussion followed the screening, featuring the director alongside Elmira Muratova (ECMI) and Gwendolyn Sasse (ZOiS). More information about the documentary is available here: The Return.
