ECMI Library
The ECMI Library is an independent collection of books, journals, and grey literature of more than 3,000 items covering many aspects of minority issues. The highly specialized collection offers public access to a variety of materials in more than twenty languages on interethnic relations, language and cultural diversity issues and ethnic conflict in Europe.
The Library includes a useful reference section and a considerable number of published and unpublished reports, and is especially strong in the area of minority protection with regards to international law. The ECMI Library is also unique in that it includes an ever-growing number of annual reports of Ombudsman offices around the world, which provide insight into the human rights situation in many countries. Current periodical and newspaper subscriptions reflect the multidisciplinary nature of ECMI research, and reference services are provided both in-house and for the general public.

| Description | The author examines the tortuous process of regime change in Georgia from the first pro-independence protests of 1988 to the aftermath of the so-called Rose Revolution in 2004. It is set within a comparative framework that includes other transition countries, first and foremost those in the former Soviet Union. The book begins by providing two important theoretical innovations. First, it examines the notion of a regime, which is an under-theorised concept in the field of transition literature, and second, it reconceptualises O'Donnell, Schmitter and Karl's notion of a dynamic actor-driven transition. Having laid down its own theoretical framework, the book turns to the structural constraints that framed the transition in Georgia and in other republics of the former Soviet Union by looking at the point of departure, i.e. state and society in the USSR at the close of the Soviet period. T examines the evolution of the Georgian regime from 1989 to 1995 and further explores the nature of the Georgian regime between 1996 and 2001. The final section of the book addresses the theoretical and empirical problems that are posed by Georgia's so-called Rose Revolution that occurred in late November 2003, following the falsification of parliamentary elections by the incumbent authorities. This book will appeal to many different audiences but in particular those interested in democratisation and regime change, specialists in Georgian politics and scholars and students interested in the former Soviet Union more generally. |
