ECMI Library
The ECMI Library is an independent collection of books, journals, and grey literature of more than 3,000 items covering many aspects of minority issues. The highly specialized collection offers public access to a variety of materials in more than twenty languages on interethnic relations, language and cultural diversity issues and ethnic conflict in Europe.
The Library includes a useful reference section and a considerable number of published and unpublished reports, and is especially strong in the area of minority protection with regards to international law. The ECMI Library is also unique in that it includes an ever-growing number of annual reports of Ombudsman offices around the world, which provide insight into the human rights situation in many countries. Current periodical and newspaper subscriptions reflect the multidisciplinary nature of ECMI research, and reference services are provided both in-house and for the general public.

| Description | This book examines both empirically and conceptually the causes and impacts of strivings for self-determination and autonomy and the relevant dimensions: legal, political-admnistrative, ethnic-cultural, economic, and strategic. The empirical analysis attempts to consider examples in all major regions. The book is divided into three parts. In Part 1, an examination of the conceptual foundations, challenges, and limitations of self-determination, Chapters 1-5 elaborate the various dimensions concerning self-determination in the international system. Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 consider the future of the nation-state in a changing global environment and its effect on the classical perspective of self-determination under international law. Chapters 3-5 are critical evaluations of, respectively, the international responses to self-determination crises and the question of national sovereignty, the limits of self-determination, and the danger of creating a legislated communal identity. Part 2 contains case studies of self-determination struggles in countries and regions around the globe in light of some of the concerns and issues addressed in Part 1. Part 3 consists of a final assessment and an extensive appendix. The final assessment puts the various case studies into the context of the emerging international system and delineates two mechanisms to address and anticipate issues of self-determination in a given state: the introduction of modes and mechanisms in a national constitution, and the elaboration of a new option to satisfy communal aspirations of freedom and equality with the longings and needs of the individual citizen in our interdependent world-communal self-governance plus regional integration. |

Materials from the ECMI Library may not be loaned out, but can be consulted in the Danish library on the following days:
