ECMI at State Parliament of Schleswig-Holstein
On Wednesday, 30 September 2020, the ECMI Director Vello Pettai and Senior Researcher Ljubica Djordjević paid a visit to the State Parliament of Schleswig-Holstein. The ECMI was invited to participate in the meeting of the Committee for European Affairs (Committee for Federal and European Affairs, Cooperation in the Baltic Sea and North Sea Area, and Minorities).
At the very beginning of the session, Pettai was welcomed by the Committee and presented the work of the ECMI. Besides a short description of the structure and work of the Centre, he focused on the upcoming plans of the Centre and prospects of the future research. After the visit of the Minister-President in August, this was another occasion to present a newly adopted stronger research focus on the minority issues in the German-Danish border region to the political representatives in Schleswig-Holstein.
The second issue on the meeting agenda was implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Reflecting the report presented to the Committee by the SH government, Djordjević presented her expert comments and remarks on behalf of the ECMI. Other experts commenting on the report were for example Dr. Sibylle Pfeil (vice-chair of the ECMI Executive Board) in her capacity of a member of the CoE Committee of Experts on the Language Charter, and Goesta Toft on behalf of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN).
