Minority arrangements and Regional Links

The Department of Border Region Studies is active within the following core areas: issues relating to the Danish-German border region; issues relating to the European border regions, including European integration and cooperation efforts; and other regional issues.

Sydslesvig (= South Schleswig)
Useful links to information on political parties representing the Danish minority in South Schleswig, the Danish education system, health services, the Danish press, and cooperation with other ethnic groups in Europe can be found here.

Flensborg Avis
This newspaper appears daily in Danish and German. The interests of the Danish minority are reported here. Local and regional news from the Danish viewpoint can be found here.

Duborg-Skolen is the only Danish High School in northern Germany, serving 50 Danish primary schools. The degree acquired after seven years after the seventh form (equivalent to the US High School Diploma or the British General Certificate of Education, A-Level) is recognized both in Denmark and Germany, and certifies fluency in both Danish and German.

Danish Central Library for South Schleswig
This library does a commendable job of serving the Danish minority in northern Germany.

SSW in the parliament of Schleswig-Holstein
(Südschleswiger Wählerverband - Sydslesvigsk Vælgeforening - South Schleswig League of Voters) The SSW is recognized as the political party of the Danish minority in South Schleswig. This party has taken the initiative in ways that are now accepted as steps toward problem resolution in areas such as promotion of the structural economy of South Schleswig, the Scandinavian idea of a social community of solidarity and a policy supporting education.

Schleswig Party SP
The Schleswig Party (SP) has represented the German minority in Denmark since 1920. SP encourages cross-border cooperation. In the political arena, the German minority and the Danish majority coexist well.

Association of Germans in North Schleswig
(Bund deutscher Nordschleswiger - BDN) This is the main organization of the German minority in Denmark, whose work encompasses cultural, social and economic aspects. It is also the major organization supporting the Schleswig Party. Useful addresses can be found here.
